NEW YORK -- New York police officer and defensive tactics instructor Stephen Kardian is now teaching the popular women’s self-defense course called Rape Escape on the East Coast. He was named as a certified instructor of the program by the Women’s Self-Defense Institute, a community service group which teaches the Rape Escape curriculum to women and girls around the country. Kardian has been a police officer for 23 years and a
martial artist for 25 years. He is a senior defensive tactics instructor at the
Westchester County Police Academy, N.Y., and has instructed international,
federal, state and local law enforcement officers since 1980. He is currently a
sergeant with the Mount Pleasant Police Department in Westchester County. Kardian kicked off the Rape Escape classes at Club Fit, the premier health club in Westchester. “I have taught many safety and self-defense programs for women age 12 to 70 and the Rape Escape program offers a more comprehensive approach than other programs and coverers most any assault scenario a woman could find herself in,” said Kardian. “More times than I care to recall I have interviewed both the victim and the predator in sexual assault cases and I can tell you that this program’s approach, tactics and techniques are right on.” The Rape Escape program was developed over a seven-year period with the involvement of hundreds of women to formulate a strategy that allows women to realistically and effectively defend themselves during a sexual assault. “This is a wonderful defensive tool for our friends and loved ones,” he said. “Rape Escape addresses the real world and is a credible and workable solution to a horrific crime.” Kardian said he will be scheduling more classes for groups, businesses and organizations throughout the region.
