Q:

My situation involves myself, an attacker and a good friend if mine. It took place about two blocks from my home...all three of us were quite drunk at the time. The subject in question insisted on fighting me, I stood firm and stated that a fight was not necessary and that to do so would be foolish and consequential. However, alcohol and adrenaline are a nasty combination, the attacker insisted and chaos ensued.

Long story short...I knocked the guy out with one punch, but my friend then rushed in and began kicking him in face and head while he was on the ground. The [attacker] spent the night in the hospital and left with a $5000 bill! I feel horrible about the whole thing...the guy has not pressed charges, he knows me (we were classmates in college), but he doesn't know where I live specifically, only that I am close to where he lives.

I should mention that I know where he lives [and that he has several warrants out for selling drugs and drug use]. My concern is whether or not this guy is likely to come back and try to f--- me up. I do not own any self-defense items of any mention, what can I do to be prepared for the retaliation which I feel is imminent?

Help!

A.

Sounds like a crazy situation. My short answer to your Question is YES. He is likely to retaliate.

There is purportedly an old Samurai saying that says "After the victory, tighten the chin strap on your helmet."

Don't let your guard down for one minute. Don't let this guy know where you live. Precisely because he CANNOT call the cops, he will need to exact his street justice on you himself or with his buddies. Criminals and gangs work on the old Mafia concept that no show of disrespect or disloyalty can be allowed to go unanswered.

Now, having said this, he might chalk up the fight as a miscalculation on his part and nothing may come of it. Geoff Thompson and others I've heard said they always expect "come backs" or retaliation. But they get the word out on the street that no matter how many times you come at them, they will ALWAYS throw down on you, so don't even bother.

Prepare for war, then pray that you'll never need to go to war is my advice.

  1. Keep your cell phone near and call the cops the first inkling you get of trouble with this guy.
  2. Take your name off of your mail box. Protect your privacy.
  3. Don’t frequent your old haunts for some time.
  4. Don’t go out drinking and get too drunk.
  5. Don’t start bragging (or let your friend, either) around town about how you beat this guy down. It might fuel a serious need for him to save face. If he is in any kind of street business, he’s going to need to keep his “street cred”.

You might be lucky that he was by himself. As long as you and your buddy don’t start popping off about the situation, he might let it slide since no one else was a witness.

Good luck. Stay alert.
