Q: First of all, carrying a firearm is an undertaking of great responsibility. When you do, I implore you to gain as much knowledge about the laws of your municipality and state when it comes to your legally carried firearm. There is not a blanket answer to your question as some states have slightly different laws on lawful concealed carry. Generally the answer is going to be no, you are not required to declare your weapon to a law enforcement official. I would go as far as to say that if you are a responsible citizen who is not violating the law, your chances of being stopped by a cop is just about nil. However, as a responsible citizen I would also generally say that it is in everyone's best interests for you to advise the officer that you are carrying your weapon.
There are some attorneys who have told me that you don't have to volunteer any information when stopped by an officer. However, most of them agree that when asked, you answer the officer directly. When I'm on patrol, I appreciate it when citizens inform me of their
concealed carry permit and firearm. |
