Q:  Does pepper spray expire or does it last a long time?  And the key chain size canister, is it a one-time use?

A:  People usually recommend that you change out your pepper spray every year or two. But I've had canisters for four or five years that have still been potent.

As far as my philosophy on using your spray -- all of the sizes should be considered a one-time use. In other words, if you HAVE to use your spray, be sure you use ALL OF IT on the guy. There should not be any holding back...if he continues to approach you should be hosing and hosing him. Force him to come through the fog of the spray in order to get you. Use the spray like a chemical shield which allows you the chance to escape.

The fact that the key chain sized units are a trade off on size vs. capacity, I would definitely consider it a one-time use.

I have tried to keep half-used units around for training and to tell you the truth, the pepper spray solution gets all over stuff and you can still get a whiff of it every once in a while.

So I would recommend two things:

1. Treat your spray as a life-saving tool. Every couple of years, spend a few bucks with a friend and replace your canisters. 2. If you have to use your spray, don't be stingy -- continue to spray the guy until your canister is empty. There is little use in trying to save it for another time.

I hope this helps. You might want to visit the Women's Self-Defense Institute site at www.rapeescape.com for free self-defense information.
