Newsletter for September 2004 Inside this issue: Self-Defense Tactics Course in Washington Oct. 23
"Pistols are not reliable fight stoppers. Even what we describe as
'solid hits' are often ineffective. We must be fully prepared to shoot
with surgical accuracy more times than we think could possibly be necessary, if
we expect to live through a fight. And, most importantly, we must
never relax too soon!" John Farnam

Schools' Readiness for Crises Criticized
The recent terrorist murders of the school children in Beslan, Russia, creates a sense of urgency in a soon-to-be-released study by the non-profit America Prepared Campaign, a New York-based group formed after Sept. 11, 2001.
The study says that the 20 largest school districts in the nation are not doing enough to protect children in the event of an attack. Preliminary word suggests that scenarios in the study include evacuation plans due to chemical plants and other hazards near schools as well as plans for dealing with an active shooter on school property.
In an electronic variation of the scam where a person calls you and tells you they are a bank examiner, the Department of Homeland Security now reports that a new scam using e-mail and a Web page could be used to separate you from your bank account.
The scam goes like this:
You get an e-mail claiming that your bank I.D. might have been stolen and you are redirected to a Web site that offers customers assistance. If the Web site is even visited, a Trojan Horse file is activated that allows scammers to log the user's computer usage which could include personal and financial details.
Apparently, not all virus protection programs will guard against this type of attack.
The obvious answer is to immediately call your bank should receive any electronic communications along this line. Banks and other financial services have repeatedly said they will NEVER ask customers to confirm account information or passwords electronically.
Air Rage Still an Issue In Calgary, Canada, a man was recently convicted of assault and fined $3500 for air rage. During a flight, the man began swearing at the flight attendants and escalated to him threatening other passengers. The incident culminated in him grabbing a flight attendant by the neck. Despite the numerous witnesses, the man later claimed that he had done nothing wrong and that the flight attendant lied about being choked. Okay, so we are not surprised about the guy being a nut. But the fact remains, he could be on your next flight. Take a look at some of the things you can do if you run into an air rage incident while airborne.
Shopping Rage?
A catchy title perhaps, but really a workplace violence issue here.
In the UK, the retail workers' union reports that between 1995 and 2001, over 200,000 shop workers were threatened with violence by customers and 100,000 were actually assaulted. There are those that predict more recent figures are sure to go higher.
What are you doing as an employer to protect your employees?
Look for law suits from employees in the future if companies fail to respond to this trend. The argument will be that the trend is clear and the company did nothing about it, therefore the company failed to provide a safe working environment.
Meanwhile, if you are an employee and your company does nothing to protect you, take some action. Get the company to provide a safer environment or get training yourself so you know what to do and how to defend yourself from injury should you be attacked.
“When going into harm’s way, the combat shotgun provides one with a means of quickly achieving fire superiority. At close range, it remains the ultimate power tool. Hit probability, speed of engagement, and stopping potential are superior to the pistol. Unlike magazine fed, semi-auto rifles, the shotgun is politically untainted and is available to law-abiding citizens just about everywhere.”
