Tasers Gaining More Acceptance by Law Enforcement
I've mentioned before that the less-lethal Taser is enjoying some very good results in the field. And it seems that more and more agencies across the land are adopting it.
A Taser fires two barbed darts with copper wires. It fires a five-second burst of electricity that interrupts communication between the brain and muscles. The muscles contract, usually causing the person to fall down. Though there have been in-custody deaths of suspects after a Taser was used, the Taser shot has never been determined as the cause of death.
Most of the results that I've seen have been very satisfactory and the device could be the most revolutionary personal protection device we seen in a long, long time. The only failures that I am hearing about from the field is that the Taser does not work very well on very obese subjects. Apparently the 50,000 volts put out by the Taser cannot reach the muscles underneath a thick layer of fatty tissue.
Taser International has come out with a new model which we'll be testing soon.
I watched the video of the female law enforcement officer in Texas the other day who was saved from injury or death by the intervention of two citizens and it reminded me of the old story about how to boil a frog alive. If you recall the old adage, if you drop a frog into a boiling pot of water it immediately jumps out. But if you put it into a pot of tepid water and slowly turn up the heat, the frog gets boiled alive.
When you are in a conflict, the key is to recognize when the water is heating up. That will give you enough warning and time to jump out of the pot before it begins to boil. Check out the article on how to regain control in a low-level fight before it gets out of hand.
The Boogie Man is Real
His name is John Jamelske.
He is the 67-year-od guy in Syracuse, New York, who held women as sex slaves in a dungeon buried beneath his home.
Jamelske is being held in jail without bail on charges of kidnapping, rape, sodomy and sexual abuse. He was arrested after a 16-year-old girl told authorities he had held her hostage for nearly seven months in a concrete dungeon he built under his back yard. Since Jamelske's arrest, four other women have told police they were abducted and repeatedly raped by him.
Police suspect there are other victims and said one of
the victims was held captive for more than two years. Jamelske is not the only monster like this in the world. They are out there and they are a threat to women and girls everywhere.
I've offered information before on sex rings which operate around the world and any one of John Douglas' books offers a wealth of real-world cases of the disturbing, perverted world of sick men looking to prey on females.
If you are a women, you are not being paranoid. The Boogie Man is real. He is out there and looking for prey. Get self-defense training for yourself and your daughters.
New Certified Instructors for Rape Escape
Speaking of self-defense training for women, there are now 12 newly certified instructors for Rape Escape across the country and in Europe.
The women's self-defense instructors were trained and certified in the popular Rape Escape method of rape prevention in Phoenix May 3 and 4. The training covered all three levels of the program from dealing with the most common sexual assault positions, to handling date rape attacks and finally, dealing with the homicidal rapist who attacks you with a weapon.
Additional training and certification courses are being planned around the country and in the UK in the near future. E-mail me if you are interested in attending or would like to host the certification course.
He's Drunk: Does Your Self-Defense System Rely Too Much on Pain Compliance?
That's the title of a new article on Rape Escape.com which also has implications for anyone interested in self-defense.
The fact is, most of the time I've found myself fighting someone who is high or intoxicated. If they weren't drunk, we probably would not be fighting!
The article came about in response to concerns by an instructor who found that her favorite technique -- a kick to the groin of an attacker -- wasn't reliable when the attacker was in a condition that gave him a higher pain tolerance. She surmised that even if he did feel the effects the next day, it would be too late to save her or her students at the time of attack.
If you find yourself incredulous at the behavior of someone, if they are doing something really stupid or the thought just pops into your head, "what the hell is that guy's problem", then chances are you are dealing with someone who is high on something.
Using your favorite pain compliance technique on them might be less than reliable. You might want to consider techniques that are more mechanical in nature for self-defense.
Remember to stay safe out there. Keep your head up and your eyes open.
