Sex Slaves: Europe's Trade In Women

MSNBC.com infiltrated a gang of human traffickers that sells unsuspecting young women from Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union into sexual slavery. The woman pictured here was rescued in Macedonia.

I have been in Europe during some heavily covered kidnappings and disappearances of women from England and France on holiday.  These crimes were widely considered to be part of the slave trade that still exists.  Get more information from MSNBC.com.

And please, don't let your guard down when you are traveling.

Rape Victim Receives Sentence of Stoning

As incredible as the above story is, check out this New York Times story.  A Pakistani woman was raped repeatedly by her brother-in-law and now she faces a death sentence.

 Never Say Never Part 2

You can’t always say always and you should never say never.

When it comes to training for self-defense and defensive tactics, be careful of programs and instructors that "guarantee" a certain reaction, a certain technique or one that mandates that certain techniques be done a particular way or order.

In every system or curriculum I’ve seen, there are certain "rules" that are set forth for students. But for every rule that is out there are a number of situations where that rule could and should be broken.

Be cognizant that adherence to a strict dogma when it comes to the incredibly variable and freewheeling world of personal combat can lead to style bias. Click here to go to an article discussing style bias.

Instead, look for instruction that concentrates on concepts and principles with good latitude for flexibility in techniques for different body types, temperaments and athletic skills.

Be honest with yourself

It must be some sort of quirk of human nature.  But many, many people I meet overestimate their fitness level or skill level.

Is it a weird sort of denial?  Or is it a some twisted attempt to impress people?  Click here for the full story with examples of some of the worst offenders.

London's Surging Crime Leads to Night Court Experiment

Britain is taking a page from New York's famed "night courts" that keep the wheels of justice turning 24 hours per day to tackle London's surge in street crime.

Street crime rose by 13 percent in England and Wales in 2000-2001, but appears to have skyrocketed since. In January alone it rose by 40 percent, and another 29 percent jump is predicted for 2001-02.

UK Women's Self-Defense Connection

Speaking of crime in London, I have been in contact with Liz Clark, a personal protection instructor in the United Kingdom.

She is a very passionate instructor having personally experienced -- and fought off -- a sexual assault.  She and her husband now teach throughout England and Scotland.  She has a very impressive background and she and I are on the same page about lots of different self-defense issues.

For our members in the UK and on the Continent, you should check out her Web site.

Kennedy Cousin Trial Shows Brutal Side of Rape Attempt

The grisly evidence and autopsy photos in the high profile murder trial of Kenney cousin Michael Skakel reinforces my contention that you cannot presume that a sexual assault will not escalate into a homicide.  It is a very personal choice as to whether a defender chooses to fight back, but I think you could very well be fighting for your life.

Martha Moxley is shown in this 1974 file photo. Moxley was beaten to death with a golf club on Oct. 30, 1975, in Belle Haven, a gated shoreline community in Greenwich, Conn. Michael Skakel, a nephew of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, has been charged in connection with Moxley's death.Forensic experts testifying about the 1975 murder of  Martha Moxley described on how the teenage victim was beaten and stabbed with a golf club after what might have been an attempted sexual assault.

Forensic scientist Henry Lee said her jeans and underpants were pulled to her ankles before she died. Moxley had been struck in the head eight or nine times with enough force that the golf club shattered. Two pieces sailed hundreds of feet from the scene, Lee said.

Moxley and Michael Skakel were 15 years old when she died. Her body was found Oct. 31, 1975. The Skakels are nephews of Ethel Kennedy, Robert Kennedy's widow.

Connecticut's chief medical examiner, H. Wayne Carver, has presented autopsy photos showing that Moxley was stabbed twice in the head and once through the throat with a piece of the golf club shaft. The autopsy pictures brought members of Moxley's family to tears.

Skakel was convicted and could get up to life in prison for murder.
