Defend University Newsletter June 2000

Welcome to our new members from Washington, Montana, Alaska, United
Kingdom, South Africa and Israel.

After repeated requests, Defend University is beginning production on a
number of digitally mastered self-defense instructional videos. Currently
the “Rape Escape” level 1 curriculum is being readied. Others on tap
include “Rape Escape” level 2, “Be Your Own Bodyguard” for civilians,
“Stand Up Skills for Grapplers” and “Defend & Control” for public safety
and security personnel.

Please e-mail me at defenduniversity@yahoo.com and give me some feedback
on which titles sound attractive and other possible subjects you would
like to see explored. For the considerable number of our United Kingdom
visitors, there is a probability that any of the instructional tapes can
be converted to PAL format for a small additional charge.

Surprise, surprise. Richard Scott Baumhammers, 34, the man arrested in a
Pittsburgh shooting rampage that killed three immigrants, a Jewish woman
and a black man is being called a “paranoid” by a neurologist who
befriended him. In addition, attorney Lee Rothman said that Baumhammers
had been treated since 1993 for an unspecified mental disorder, and that
Baumhammers had voluntarily admitted himself to a psychiatric ward at
least once. Investigators believe Baumhammers walked into his neighbor's
house and fatally shot Anita Gordon, 63, a Jewish interior designer. They
believe he then drove to her synagogue and fired at the front doors.
Police say Baumhammers also shot up the doors of another synagogue, shot
and wounded one man and killed another at an Indian grocery, killed a
Vietnamese delivery driver and a Chinese manager at a restaurant, and
gunned down a black man at a suburban karate school. Officers eventually
cornered him about 20 miles from the first attack.

A couple of things to think about here: (1) how do you defend yourself
from a crazed gunman whom randomly walks into your house or your place of
business? (2) Could this senseless slaughter have been terminated promptly
by an armed citizen response?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Used to Quell Riot?

A highly reliable source says the Immigration and Naturalization Service
detention facility in El Centro, Calif., had a major riot April 13 that
was quelled by a special squad of officers trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Reportedly, the 80 hard-core criminals housed at this facility were
subdued by these officers using various takedowns, throws, armlocks,
wristlocks, and even footlocks used to turn subjects onto their stomachs
to be handcuffed. The main threats to the officers were “shanks” made out
of toothbrushes, but injuries were minimal. According to this same source,
the Department of Justice has officially named BJJ as the defensive system
of choice.

Video is available from BattleJax on Feb 26,2000.

Footage is one angle; this is a straight dupe so there is no editing
and it is not perfect, but it is a fairly high quality picture with over
2.5
hours of fights that include 5 amateur muay-thai bouts on the end.

Seventy percent of inmates in local jails (U.S.) were serving time for
drug offenses or were regular drug users before incarceration, the U.S.
Bureau of Justice Statistics has reported. And, incredibly, 10% of inmates
flunked drug tests administered while in jail, the study also found.

Non-Lethal Device Uses Pepper to Subdue Suspects

The device, called PepperBall, is now being used at some 60 police
departments from California to Virginia to New York City. Scientists at
Jaycor were inspired by Paintball, the outdoor war game in which players
shoot small, paint-filled projectiles at each other.
In PepperBall, the paint inside a projectile is replaced by pepper powder
extracted from dried jalapeno peppers. The projectile explodes on impact,
sending a 2-foot cloud of powder into the air to, hopefully be introduced
to the suspect's mouth, nose, and eyes. and lungs. Supposedly, the effects
of the powder are like that of tear gas and wear off after several
minutes. PepperBall got its first widespread use in Seattle during the
World Trade Organization riots last fall. Seattle police have declined to
talk about the PepperBall device, citing potential lawsuits. Since last
fall, several police departments have bought the PepperBall device, which
costs about $675 a kit, which includes a single launcher. A number of
large police and sheriff's agencies are testing PepperBall, including the
New York Police Department, San Diego Police Department and the sheriff's
departments of Los Angeles and San Diego counties. In San Diego, SWAT
officers already have successfully used PepperBall twice. Both of the
situations involved gaining compliance from suicidal suspects.

Oh Great!

At least one, and perhaps a dozen -- laptop computers which may have held
classified information disappeared from the State Department about two
months ago and the FBI is investigating whether it was stolen, the State
Department said Monday. The Washington Post said the computer disappeared
from the department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research and definitely
contained highly classified information.

Planning on Moving to a New Neighborhood?

Check out the crime rate at this link:

The Relocation Crime Lab has crime indexes for thousands of U.S. cities as
well as Canadian cities.

The Swiss and Their Guns

Both anti-self-defense groups and pro-self-defense groups often cite
Switzerland as an example to boost their cause. Imagine a country filled
to the brim with automatic weapons, rocket launchers and assault rifles,
yet with an incredibly low crime rate. Anti-self-defense groups claim it
is because of the strict registration and control of firearms.
Pro-self-defense groups claim it is the mandatory ownership of assault
rifles by every household in the country.

Both sides are right – and wrong. For perhaps the best and most accurate
look at the situation, go to http://www.ssanz.org.nz/articles/swiss.html .

New Magic Non-Lethal Weapons for Police?

The Year in Defense 2000 reports on the military development of various
non-lethal weapons which have applications for law enforcement tactical
units. According to the magazine, these chemical agents and technology
already exist and, in certain situations, have already been deployed.
Besides new non-lethal ammunition and chemical agents, the military has
acoustic and microwave devices which can render a person unable to
function. Using very low-frequency sound generators, these acoustic
weapons can cause involuntary loss of body functions and control.
Electro-Magnetic Pulse generators can be used to knock out all electrical
appliances in a building or area. New rapidly expanding foams can deny a
person movement in a vehicle or building. Superlubricants make surfaces
too slippery to use while other chemical agents cause car tires to
dissolve. The magazine reports that some of these weapons first saw use
with the Marine Corps in Somalia in 1994. Ironically, the secrecy
surrounding their development meant many battlefield commanders could not
request them because they were not known to even exist.

Self-Reliance and Self-Defense

From the March 22 edition of the Arizona Republic (U.S.) newspaper: "A
Chandler woman is hospitalized in critical condition today after her
estranged boyfriend broke into her apartment and stabbed her as she
screamed for help to a 911 operator, according to police. Sandra Perkins,
45, was stabbed repeatedly in her left arm and chest Tuesday night. Her
ex-boyfriend, Roy Doyle Mayfield, 40, was arrested and faces charges of
assault and burglary. The incident began about 9:45 p.m. when Mayfield
kicked in Perkins' front door and began stabbing her. When he went to
close the front door, Perkins called 911, but Mayfield returned and
continued stabbing her while she was on the phone. At one point, a
neighbor heard her screams and tried to help, but Mayfield chased him
away. Perkins eventually escaped and ran outside, but Mayfield caught her
again and was stabbing and kicking her when police arrived."

What do you suppose Perkins was thinking during this savage attack? "Thank
God for increased gun control legislation" or "I hope my neighbor is a NRA
member?"

Unfortunately, the police cannot save you. As heroic as individual police
officers are, they will not be there when you are attacked. They cannot
get there fast enough to stop your assailant from severely injuring or
killing you. The Supreme Court says they are not responsible for your
safety. The sad fact is that politicians are compromising your safety.
The current White House administration and spokesman Joe Lockhart are busy
demonizing the NRA and others who are trying to keep the Federal
government from infringing on your self-defense rights.

On mountain or swiftwater rescues, we don’t count on the victim being able
to assist in their own rescue. Conversely, you cannot count on others
around you to either possess the ability or the determination to help you
when you need it.

It is up to you to gain the knowledge and the skills to defend yourself
and your loved ones.
